CUMMINGS SCHOOL OF VETERINARY MEDICINE AT TUFTS UNIVERSITYHARRINGTON ONCOLOGY PROGRAM

June 2007PATIENT OF THE MONTH

The Oncology Staff has selected Blue O’Neil as our June patient of the month.

Blue O’Neil is a sweet, gentle grey cat. He was diagnosed with a vaccine associated fibrosarcoma in August 2006. He received radiation and chemotherapy in the fall of 2006 to help shrink the tumor. After his side effects healed from radiation Blue underwent a hemipelvectomy in January 2007 to remove the rest of the tumor. In order to get the entire tumor they also had to remove his leg.

As you can imagine the decision to amputate Blue’s right back leg was a very difficult decision to make by his parents. Since the surgery Blue has adapted amazingly well walking around with three legs and his daily life has changed very little since his diagnosis. He is still greeting his family at the door, spends his days sleeping on his bed and lounging in sunny windows. When it comes to play he likes tinfoil balls. Blue likes to voice his opinion on things that matter most to him, “feeding time”.

Blue was rescued by his family 10 years ago from Baypath Humane Society, when back then he was only a kitten. He already had the name Blue so his family kept this name, because they say it seemed to fit. He shares their home with his littermate, an orange tabby named Wilson, and a dog named Max (also adopted).

His mother says their home wouldn’t be the same without him, and we consider him a success story! Thanks to everyone at Tufts who cared for Blue during his treatments.

We love you Blue and wish you nothing but a happy and healthy future.
Love Mindy
